India and Brazil are widening cooperation in defence and strategic technologies as bilateral trade moves towards USD 20 billion, Brazilian Ambassador Kenneth Felix Haczynski da Nóbrega said at an event in New Delhi on Friday.
The envoy described the relationship as entering a new phase ahead of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He said political backing and business engagement were creating momentum across several sectors, including defence, critical minerals, energy, pharmaceuticals, aerospace and artificial intelligence.
“Political vision and business dynamism are converging to take Brazil-India relations to a new level,” Brazilian Ambassador Kenneth Felix Haczynski da Nóbrega said.
Defence and emerging technology on the agenda
Da Nóbrega said the two countries were developing links in strategic industries while also working on broader technology cooperation. He specifically identified defence, digital infrastructure, energy, agriculture, healthcare and artificial intelligence as areas where the partnership was being strengthened.
He also said India and Brazil had recently agreed to connect their efforts on rare earths and critical minerals. According to the ambassador, the countries had established partnerships in pharmaceutical research and innovation and launched a wider digital partnership. The statement places defence cooperation alongside supply-chain and technology priorities that both governments consider important to their longer-term engagement.
Brazilian aerospace company Embraer was described as a prominent new entrant in India. The ambassador also said Indian companies had invested significantly in Brazil, with the total stock of Indian investment reaching USD 10 billion.
Trade and institutional links
Brazil is now India’s fifth-largest trading partner, according to the ambassador. Negotiations are also under way to expand the trade agreement between India and the Southern Common Market, or MERCOSUR. Da Nóbrega attributed the stronger commercial relationship to more than 150 business and technology missions exchanged by the two countries over the past three years.
