CNN, citing two US officials, says American forces deployed in the region are ready to execute large-scale military options against Iran within 96 hours of an order from President Donald Trump; CENTCOM and the Pentagon have compiled a wide-ranging target list, and US intelligence assesses Iran and the Houthis are preparing to respond.

US military units deployed across West Asia could begin major operations against Iran within 96 hours of a presidential order, CNN reported on 26 October 2026, citing two US officials familiar with internal planning. The network said planners judge enough forces are in theatre to carry out strikes that would extend beyond limited, quickly repairable strikes on radars and missile launchers.

CNN said that commanders at US Central Command (CENTCOM) and officials at the Pentagon have developed a wide-ranging target list that reportedly includes Iranian energy infrastructure, military facilities and nuclear-related sites. The report quoted one unnamed official as saying the effort “will be a big effort.”

“It will be a big effort,” CNN quoted one US official as saying, citing two officials familiar with planning discussions.

US planning and caution

The report said current and former US officials involved in planning discussions believe President Donald Trump may order action at some point before year-end, with a higher likelihood after the US midterm elections on 3 November 2026. CNN noted, however, that officials also warned the President has in the past appeared inclined toward certain measures and at times stepped back.

The Pentagon provided CNN with a general statement stressing planning is part of the Department’s role. According to the network, a senior Pentagon official told CNN: “The Department is a planning organisation, and its job is to develop and execute military options ordered by the President.”

Regional reactions and assessments

CNN cited additional US intelligence assessments that, in Washington’s view, Iran and Yemen’s Houthi rebels are taking the possibility of renewed US strikes seriously and are preparing to respond. The network reported that Tehran and the Houthis would likely retaliate immediately if the US and Israel launched new operations.

  • Sources cited: CNN, two unnamed US officials, other current and former US officials, CENTCOM and a senior Pentagon official (as quoted to CNN).
  • Scope of planning: described by CNN as likely to include energy infrastructure, military sites and nuclear facilities, according to the network’s reporting of US planning discussions.
  • Timing: officials told CNN the order could come before the end of 2026 but is seen as most likely after the 3 November US midterm elections.

The White House declined to comment to CNN on the network’s reporting, the story said. CNN also reported officials told it that Iranian forces have become more familiar with US tactics, complicating efforts to eliminate all intended targets.

Mission Victory India readers should note that the operational claims, target descriptions and timing are those reported to CNN by US officials; they remain planning assessments and not a confirmed course of action unless and until a presidential order is issued and the US Department of Defence or CENTCOM releases an operational statement.
